A niche of my own

Writer: Tom PahlowTom Pahlow

Freelancing is fundamentally a business and one of the major pieces of business advice out there is to find a niche and fill it. It’s solid advice and it translates to every aspect of business, even freelancers.

Finding a niche
Apparently, typing niche into Unsplash gives you coffee, mugs, perfumes and wall recesses. So here is a coffee machine to inspire you to find your niche.

It’s a simple principle, find something that no one else can offer and make that your niche. The more you specialise, the more you can charge, and everyone knows that money is directly equivalent to happiness.

It’s not enough to be a writer, you have to choose whether you are a copywriter, technical writer, creative writer or some other kind of writer. But even then, you have to decide whether you are a cosmetics technical writer, a tech blog copywriter, a period piece author, a Memoir ghostwriter or any other super specific thing.

So, what happens when you don’t want to be just one thing? What happens when you want to be seven different things? Eight? Not nine though. Never nine.

Well, one option is to say 'To hell with it, I’ll do what I want!'.

Another option is to bend the question to your whims. You make your niche a little unconventional. Say to yourself, 'This one is for me. I will write what I want and when I want.' Of course, some very smart people who I respect have told me on several occasions that my niche is me. And no one is more me than me so that takes some pressure off I guess.

I already have a portfolio of creative writing, professional writing and worldbuilding that any prospective client can look at (see what I did there). So, this blog will be mine and it will cover whatever I feel like covering. If I want to go on a rant about not specialising, then I will.

If I want to deep dive into the merits of developing a whole back story for an entire race because I decided to add one scene to whatever I’m working on then I will.

If I want to tell you to have a lovely day, or that I’m having a bad one, then I expect you to feel supported or to briefly think that sucks for him before you move on with your day.

So, to sum up. This blog will not specifically have a niche. or maybe it will have several. Or it will be on the niche that is me.

Confused yet? I know I am.
