The Bifrost Creative

Writer: Tom PahlowTom Pahlow

It's hard to make it in the creative industries. There aren't many defined paths to take, meeting other creatives can be hard and information can be scarce. The BiFrost Creative will be a bridge that helps creatives take the first steps towards their creative career. Providing information, facilitating networking among creatives and giving everyone the confidence to pursue their creative dreams.

There are so many incredibly talented creatives out there creating all manner of material. My fellow writers, visual artists of every flavour, performers, makers, digital creators and so many more. I want The Bifrost Creative to be a place where everyone can find something of use for their creative career. I will be building it using the feedback and needs of anyone in the creative industries to ensure that anyone can find the information they need to get into their chosen field.

One of the things I love about Newcastle is that the established creatives are so invested in helping the emerging ones. I would never have made it anywhere near where I am if not for the support of some incredible people. People who gave me a chance, taught me, helped me grow my network and were open to collaboration. While I'm still a long way off from my goals, I think it's about time I start contributing to the creative ecosystem and giving something back.

I have always found myself being a cheerleader for any creative idea that I come across. Whether it's a hobby project or a career path, I love seeing the things that people can come up with. The Bifrost Creative will be the home of all my attempts to be that cheerleader. A place where I can support my local creative community, and the larger creative industries where I can. Whatever your creative dream, I want to help with any tools or connections that I can.

There have now been two Bifrost panel events and I've been so happy to meet and talk to some incredible creatives in Newcastle's scene. They've each shared their experiences in the creative industries and given some great insights into creativity and how to get started in the industry.

So far we've been lucky enough to get:

  • Kara Sullivan from Guts Creative

  • Dr Kristefan Minski from Art Thinking

  • Dr Claire Twist from Tantrum Youth Arts

  • Dr Ben Matthews From the University of Newcastle

  • Zana Kobayashi from The Newcastle Art Gallery

  • Alexandra Morris from everywhere, Freelancer, event planner and fun instigator

  • David McDonald from ABC Made

There are many directions the BiFrost could go and I have a lot of plans for trying to make it a home of information, practical outcomes and networking for creatives. For now, though, I will be focusing on hosting events so that I don't immediately burn out.

As always, stay tuned and watch this space.
